Club Summary

Book Club meets on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in room 128. Do you like to talk about books? Why not meet with other book junkies for food and fun? Join the book club! Bring a book you haven’t read yet to suggest to the group.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you."
Mortimer J. Adler

Chamber Music

Chamber Music is a chance for students, who may be a bit more experienced string players, to play more advanced repertoire. One main goal for this ensemble is to be able to play just for the fun of playing. This ensemble is also our "gig" group, and often plays for special events as well as the regular band and orchestra concerts.

Car Club

The car club will meet every Wednesday in computer Lab #1 at 7:30A.M. The mission will be to discuss, analyze and compare cars of yesterday, today and tomorrow in hopes of promoting camaraderie for car enthusiasts at West Hills. Our focus will include discussions about the development and technical information among members that are interested in domestic and foreign cars.

Chess Club meets throughout the year on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the media center. All grades and abilities are welcome. Students play each member in the club, thus meeting kids from other grades, and challenging their abilities. Student members instruct peers on game tactics and strategies. We have a double elimination tournament later in the year. Sportsmanship is stressed.

Count Me In meets on Friday mornings from 7:15-8:00 a.m. The club offers students a chance to combat bullying and other forms of negative peer interactions. As members of the club at all three grade levels, students are given a chance to examine their own behavior, with an eye toward becoming more sensitive to how their actions and words affect those around them. Students also are encouraged to identify negative student behaviors that affect our school’s climate, while acquiring and using various intervention strategies designed to reduce such behaviors.

Current Events meets on Wednesday mornings from 7:30-8:00 a.m. and is open to students of all grade levels. Each session, students will discuss local, national and global events with their peers and see how their knowledge stacks up against other teams of students in the school. History Club will familiarize students with major issues from U.S. and world history. Students will learn about the causes of major world conflicts and the diplomacy efforts that were taken to avoid said conflicts. Students will also learn to identify how these major conflicts shaped the geopolitical structure of our modern world. There will be an emphasis on the political shifts that our nation has undergone throughout its history; culminating in a study of the political climate of our world today.

Students will be given short readings about various historical events and prominent figures, and will be expected to have discussions and debates about those topics. At times, the club will use documentary footage to stimulate interest and to show opposing sides of various issues. The purpose and goal of the club is to expose students to interesting and important historical events and to teach them a basic understanding and appreciation of how history affects our lives on a daily basis.
